Rome Cavalieri – A Special Hotel…

This review covers a three night stay at Rome Cavalieri Waldorf Astoria. We booked a King Deluxe room, but received an upgrade to a King Imperial room with access to the very impressive Imperial Club Executive Lounge.

At the time of booking the room was 80,000 HHonors points or €350/night per room. The American Express Rewards card bonus can be a helpful way of working towards a points booking.

The Hotel

The Rome Cavalieri, A Waldorf Astoria Hotel is a luxurious hillside urban resort perched atop Monte Mario, offering sweeping views of the Eternal City and the Vatican. Nestled within 15 acres of lush Mediterranean gardens, the property blends grandeur with serene retreat vibes, featuring lavish rooms and suites adorned with antiques, original artwork, and private balconies imaging St. Peter’s Basilica or manicured grounds. Guests can unwind in style amid multiple pools (including three outdoor and one indoor), two red-clay tennis courts, a scenic 800-meter fitness trail, and the expansive 2,500 m² Cavalieri Grand Spa Club offering Roman-themed treatments, Turkish bath, sauna, and plunge pools . Culinary highlights include La Pergola, Rome’s only three-Michelin-star restaurant helmed by Heinz Beck, boasting panoramic city views, a vast wine list, and inventive dishes like the refined Fagotelli “La Pergola”. Adding to its distinctive charm, the hotel houses an extraordinary private art collection—spanning over 1,000 pieces, including works by Tiepolo, Warhol, and rare tapestries—transforming its halls into a living museum . For those aiming to delve beyond the grounds, a complimentary hourly shuttle links the hotel to Via Veneto, offering a convenient 10–15 minute ride into Rome’s historic heart.

Check in and Service

The standard of service was immaculate throughout our stay. We arrived early, ahead of our room being available and received a fantastic welcome, before swiftly being relocated to the excellent Imperial Club for canapés and drinks whilst our room was prepared – meaning fairly soon after arriving at the hotel we were sat on a balcony, drinking prosecco and looking at a spectacular view of Rome:

The standard of service throughout our stay remained very high, and we spent a good amount time in the Imperial Club, which was relatively quiet throughout, with our glasses topped up regularly. Similarly service at breakfast was equally faultless.

The Room

The King Imperial room was very spacious, with grand decor and lots of interesting touches and artefacts. A large comfortable bed was accompanied by various pieces of furniture including chairs and an antique looking cupboard/chest.

The room included a good size balcony, with comfortable seating, a table and a planter:

The bathroom was large, with a shower and bath. Fittings and trim were gold throughout:

Facilities

The hotel is well equipped, with 3 outdoor and 1 indoor swimming pools. We visited in late spring and were treated to some very good weather – the pool never felt too busy though, with plenty of sun loungers and seating available. Food and drink service is available from your poolside location.

The hotel also has tennis courts and a fitness trail, which we didn’t use. However we did visit the excellent spa, which includes plunge pools and a sauna.

The highlight for us was the Imperial Club though. This is a special space, with top level service and excellent food and drink available pretty much all day. We made very good use of this throughout our visit! The Imperial Club, and the hotel more widely, are also home to some very interesting – and at times very valuable – artworks and antiques. At one point in our stay we used ‘Google Lens’ to find out the value of some of the artworks around us and were quite shocked with some of the results!

As the hotel is located on the hillside on the outskirts of the city, there is also a shuttle service into central Rome. This operated hourly in the morning and late afternoon. When we used it, it was on time and had plenty of space – although for convenience we often opted to get an Uber.

Food

Breakfast was included, thanks to our Hilton Gold status. Again the restaurant is a special space, with many interesting artworks.

Breakfast options were varied and high quality. Tea and coffee was served to the table and breakfast didn’t feel particularly busy at any point – there was plenty of space between tables and no waiting.

Summary

Rome Cavalieri – Waldorf Astoria is a special hotel, with a very high level of service and some amazing spaces, artworks and furniture. Our stay felt like a real treat and this is definitely a hotel I’d love to visit again in the future.

If you have the option to book a room with access to the Imperial Club then I would definitely recommend this. Equally having a room with a Rome view adds to the ‘wow factor’ too.
